For many families, this winter will be more difficult than any other; battling poverty and hunger on one side and seeking protection from the Covid-19 pandemic on the other. Falling temperatures pose a huge threat to life and as families without a breadwinner, many will struggle to survive and make ends meet.
Poor nutrition, high fuel costs and a lack of protection against the cold will push families in Pakistan and Azad Kashmir to breaking point. The outcome, especially for the young and old, can be devastating. Winter is generally not seen as an emergency however, tens of thousands of extra deaths occur every year due to the plight that winter brings.
Children, the homeless, elderly and those with long-term illness will lose their lives to starvation, hyperthermia and pneumonia. Many will not survive to see the warmer days. Together, we can give them hope.
Without adequate warm clothing, families are presented with a never ending battle. Even if they manage to shelter themselves from the elements, they are still likely to be cold, exposing them to frostbite and the like. Falling ill has a knock-on effect to the wider family.
Destitute adults are made to choose between medicine for themselves and their children, or food to get them through the sub-zero temperatures. Many mothers sacrifice their own health in supporting their children, which is a daunting prospect that has lasting effects.
